How we research South Bay biryani
This site is a local directory plus a cited desk-research sweep — not a scored championship and not a paid list. The last full sweep was 11 September 2026: 156 restaurant entries across 20 cities (16 core South Bay / Peninsula, 4 East Bay bonus).
What we did
Sources were a web sweep of Yelp, DoorDash, Uber Eats, restaurant websites, and local “best of” guides, plus attributed comments from a public r/bayarea thread. Style labels come from restaurants’ own menus or sites when we had them. Community-voted claims stay attributed to reviewers; we do not assert them as fact.
A 2 September 2026 menu pass captured public menus into individual restaurant pages. Those pages quote dish names and prices from the restaurant’s own site or ordering page, with the capture date. We do not treat that scrape as a live menu.
A 7 September 2026 directory audit re-checked all 20 cities (156 live listings), added Bawarchi Biryanis in Sunnyvale, and completed an OpenStreetMap / Overpass rescan (236 venue ids). A 9 September 2026 follow-up OSM pass refreshed the city snapshot and candidate queue. Style labels still rest on restaurant menus or sites when we have them.
What we did not do
- We did not independently re-taste or re-score every kitchen. Ratings are quoted as displayed on the cited platform.
- OpenStreetMap / Overpass was last rescanned on 9 September 2026 across the 20 directory cities. Candidates not already in the seed remain queued for web verification, so some takeout counters that only exist in OSM may still be missing from the live directory.
- 138 of 169 original 31 August 2026 desk-research entries were flagged as single-source or unconfirmed. Those belong in a research notebook, not in a confident “#1” sentence.
Why there is no single #1
Hyderabadi dum, Andhra gongura, Chettinad seeraga samba, and Kolkata-style biryani are different dishes. A page that crowns one winner for “best biryani Silicon Valley” is easier to spam and harder to cite. We answer with style, city, and sources instead.
